Black Hand StrawMan: The History of Organized Crime in Kansas City by Terence O’Malley One of the most efficient organized crime networks in the United States operated in Kansas City's Little Italy, dominated by the Black Hand and steeped in Sicilian customs. During Prohibition, the rise of illegal alcohol production led rival factions to unite into a cohesive and powerful criminal organization. Known as "The Outfit," the Kansas City mob continued to thrive even after the fall of the Pendergast Political Machine, reaching its peak in the early 1980s. The Outfit's control over the skim from Las Vegas casinos was eventually exposed during the infamous "Strawman" prosecutions.
